Following the recent improvement of relations between Cuba and the United States, companies were keen on starting a business in new location. What how to do it in a country where most of the people use only cash, are disappointed about financial sector and internet connection is highly limited?

Nevertheless, Cubans had to find a way how to live under such conditions and get over this burden, so Airbnb monitored these paths and tried an alternative way through already experienced Cuban network of intermediaries.

According to official statistics, approximately 22% of Cubans were connected to internet in 2011, a government-controlled Intranet. In addition around 5% use Internet without government control yet.

Airbnb, a housing marketplace and digital-payment operator, had to get accustommed to such conditions and try an alternative approach to already existing net of 'casa particulares,' registered houses providing accommodation and meal with even internet access using middlemen.

Most of the tourists have no idea how to reach an information about these 'casas.' Airbnb now is able to leave even Cuban hosts to publish on their site to attract US tourists with photographies and places with internet access possibilities.
